Day 1 – Barcelona, Spain (Embarkation) -Harmony of the Seas
The Harmony of the Seas is absolutely beautiful. Boarding the ship is relatively seamless. Once you get out of your cab at the port your bags are swiftly taken and your vacation officially begins. After we boarded the ship at 12:45 pm, we were immediately greeted by smiling crew that were singing and dancing.
First, we checked out our 8th floor balcony stateroom which was down the hall from Central Park. The room was very well appointed and roomy (for a cruise ship). I think the reconfiguration of removing the table from in front of the couch to the wall next to the dresser really opened up the space.
Next, we journeyed out to look at other areas of the Harmony. As we began walking around the ship we saw the massive Ultimate Abyss. Even though we hadn’t left port yet we HAD to try it! It was beyond exhilarating, just don’t look down from the top! (the floor is glass).
We exited the Ultimate Abyss onto the Boardwalk and now it was time to eat! At embarkation, there are a variety of dining options available which eliminates crowding. Many passengers were directed to go to the Windjammer for food not realizing that other restaurants were open such as Sorrento’s, Park Café, Solarium Bistro, Boardwalk Dog House, Café Promenade and Mini Bites. We decided to visit the Boardwalk Dog House.
While at the Boardwalk Dog House, we started to hear announcements about the muster drill so we finished eating and then headed to our muster station which was in the Royal Theater.
The muster drill was not too long. Immediately after the muster drill, the halls were flooded with people. It was the only time I could believe 6,000 people were aboard the ship. Take my advice, stay in your seat for 15 to 20 minutes and chat with your friends and family until the halls clear. The only other option is to spend the next 15 to 20 minutes waiting with a hot, anxious crowd for an elevator (that’s what I did). 🙁
After dealing with that crowd, we headed up to deck 15 to get something cool to drink and watch the ship set sail. Goodbye Barcelona!
Now, it was time to check on our luggage. We went to our stateroom and were happy to see that our luggage had arrived in a timely fashion. We relaxed a bit in the room before heading to the main dining room for our 8:45 pm traditional dining time in the American Icon Grill.
For my appetizer I chose the “Chilled Shrimp with Marie Rose Sauce and Horseradish Cocktail sauce”
For my entrée I chose the “Broiled Atlantic Salmon with Hollandaise sauce served with Potatoes Du Jour and seasonal vegetables and my wife selected the “Grilled Chicken Breast with Thyme Jus”
The waiter and assistant waiter were very friendly which made for an enjoyable dining experience.
Later that night, we went to the Aqua Theater to watch “The Fine Line”. It was the first of many wonderful shows we watched aboard the Harmony of the Seas.
Last, we returned to our stateroom around 1:30 am after leaving the Aqua Theater. Since game 7 of the NBA Finals was about to begin back home in the U.S., I had to try out the VOOM internet service so that I could stream the game. It was the perfect excuse to pay for the ship’s internet package. Note: A streaming internet package for 2 devices is expensive. If possible, I suggest you prepay for a package or find a deal before boarding the ship.
The game streamed flawlessly without any stuttering or buffering. I was very pleased with the internet quality and the fact LeBron won ring # 3!
It’s now around 5 AM local time and we dock in Palma De Mallorca in 3 hours. Goodnight!
